February 11th, 2004 GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER PROCLAIMS THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 22ND "AFRICAN-AMERICAN INFANT HEALTH WEEK"
On February 11th, 2004 Gov. Schwarzenegger proclaimed February 22nd, "African-American Infant Health Week".
"Each instance of infant mortality is a tragedy, and among African-Americans, this tragedy is too common." said Gov. Schwarzenegger. "For every 1,000 live births, nearly 13 African-American infants will succumb to disease and death.
Low birth-weight and premature delivery are a result of inadequate prenatal care, and they are the foremost contributing factors to disease and sickness among newborns. Infant health programs in our state actively offer expectant and post-natal mothers educational and supportive services to ensure they receive adequate prenatal and pediatric care.
In California, we are committed to advancing the health and well-being of our children, and the California Department of Health Services' Black Infant Health Program is dedicated to improving the lives of African-American mothers and their newborns."
