January 27th, 2004 GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER SAYS CAR TAX REFUNDS READY TO ROLL
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that refunds will start being issued to Californians who overpaid the vehicle license fee. Governor Schwarzenegger repealed the tripling of the car tax - retroactive to its October 1 effective date - as his first official act upon being sworn in on November 17.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles will electronically transfer the refund data to the State Controller this morning. Refund checks could start being mailed as soon as Friday, according to the Controller's office.
"This is fantastic news for vehicle owners," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "My first act as Governor was to repeal the car tax increase. Today's refund completes one of my most important promises to the people."
By the time the last refund checks are cashed, the Governor's action will have returned an estimated $600 million to approximately 4.7 million Californians.
