GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER APPOINTS RONALD JOSEPH AS CHIEF DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SERVICES

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of Ronald Joseph as chief deputy director of Department of General Services.

"Ron's insight and management experience will be invaluable to the Department of General Services," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "I am confident he will manage this department for the betterment of our state government and all Californians."

Joseph's career in public service spans 29 years. He has served in several key executive state management positions including executive director of the California Medical Board, chief deputy director of the Department of Health Services, assistant chief executive officer of CalSTRS and chief deputy and deputy director of the Department of Economic Opportunity. Most recently, Joseph served as interim director of the Department of Consumer Affairs.

"It's an honor to serve in Governor Schwarzenegger's Administration," said Joseph. "I look forward to helping the Governor bring efficiency and common-sense into our state government."

Joseph, 55, is from Sacramento, California and graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a degree in government. This position does not require Senate confirmation. Joseph is a Republican.

Joseph will also serve as interim director of the Department of General Services until the position is permanently filled.

The Department of General Services is the state's business agent, and performs a broad array of services for the public and its government customers. DGS annually acquires more than $4 billion worth of goods and services on behalf of state agencies. It manages more than 24 million square feet of state-owned or leased warehouses and office space. The department also maintains the state government's telecommunication systems and oversees the 911 emergency system. DGS provides most of the state's printing needs, manages the vehicle fleet, and oversees the state's insurance programs.
