GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER PROCLAIMS FEBRUARY 4TH "GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY"

On January 29th, Gov. Schwarzenegger promclaimed February 4th, "Girls and Women in Sports Day".

"The history of girls and women in sports is marked by many achievements," said Schwarzenegger, "and California Girls and Women in Sports Day commemorates this storied past and encourages continued athletic involvement.

With the passage of Title IX in 1972, women were guaranteed equal funding for interscholastic and intercollegiate sports. As Californians, we celebrate and promote the considerable advances in professional, intramural and interscholastic sports that have created vast opportunities for women to participate in athletics.

Athletics at all levels help develop self-discipline, initiative, confidence and leadership skills. The bonds forged among women involved in sports can break down social barriers, promote cultural understanding and awareness, and foster communication and cooperation."

Today, we acknowledge the many girls and women in California who participate in sports. They are providing for their health and well-being, and contributing to the strength of our state.
