GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER ANNOUNCES SENIOR APPOINTMENTS AT STATE AND CONSUMER SERVICES AGENCY

Governor Schwarzenegger today announced the appointments of George Valverde as Undersecretary and Scott Reid as Special Assistant to the Secretary and Director of the Office of the Insurance Advisor at the State and Consumer Services Agency.

"George and Scott have a wealth of experience in state and local government issues," said Schwarzenegger. "Their managerial, legislative, and policy backgrounds will be a great asset to my administration."

Valverde has served the State for more than 20 years, much of it in managerial roles, with a focus on budget issues and operations. He most recently served as deputy secretary for fiscal matters and operations at the State and Consumer Services Agency. Prior to that, Valverde served as the assistant program budget manager for the Department of Finance. Valverde holds a Master's degree in public administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Riverside, and attended Harvard University's Senior Executives in State and Local Government program. Valverde, 55, is from Sacramento and is a Democrat. This position does not require Senate confirmation.

"I am honored that Governor Schwarzenegger has asked me to join his administration and allowed me to continue serving the people of California," said Valverde.

Reid has been a top aide and advisor to Secretary Aguiar, working with him for nearly ten years in state and county government. Reid most recently served as chief of staff to Aguiar while he was a San Bernardino County Supervisor and while he was State Assemblyman from the 61st District. Reid is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Reid, 31, is a Republican from Crestline, CA. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the statutory salary is $111,000.

"I am excited about the new challenge of serving in Governor Schwarzenegger's administration and look forward to helping Secretary Aguiar at this important agency," said Reid.

The State and Consumer Services Agency is responsible for civil rights enforcement, consumer protection and the licensing of 2.3 million Californians in more than 230 different professions. The Agency also handles procurement of $4 billion worth of goods and services, the management and development of state real estate, oversight of two state employee pension funds, collecting state taxes, hiring of state employees, adopting state building standards in addition to the administration of two state museums--the California Science Center and the California African American Museum.
