Interesting that none of the entrants voiced concern over the judges, until after the contest. Were they unconcerned or was Arnold really that much smarter than ALL of them?

The author makes many comparisons of Arnold to the prior condition and does so with Coe as well. I didn’t think the contest involved Arnold 1980 versus Arnold 1974 or Coe 1980 versus Coe 1976.

The relaxed rear photo referenced by Joe Roark, I didn’t know contests were won or lost on relaxed poses.

The flexed rear back photo that the author had “blind tested” had Arnold as the winner, go figure.

Why was Coe so certain the fix was in when Mentzer was announced 5th? Coe had stated he had Arnold placed for 9-10 place. What do the 2 placings have to with each other? Was the entire judging shoddy then? Because Coe and Dickerson were placed ahead of Mentzer. Some people had an injured, tiny Zane winning?

I believe that Arnold beat the other competitors.  He just wasn’t at his personal best.  But he was still better than the other competitors.

Arnie won the 1980 MR. OLYMPIA, on the basis of his muscle SHAPE and not necessarily on the SIZE ,of his muscles;

the shape of ARNIE’S muscles, was a result of his INTELLIGENT AND EXPERIENCED conditioning ,

arnie’s muscles were ripped to the bones!

so ARGUING -saying ARNIE was smaller in muscle size doesn’t matter a lot ,

THE ARNIE OF 1973 -74 WAS HUGE AND BIG , FOR THE PRIMARY REASON OF DEFEATING THE HULK ! AND OTHER BIG GUYS ,

cause Arnie was always a big bodybuilder with a huge body frame !

saying the MR OLYMPIA was fixed is again irrelevant , since even today , we can judge the mr.o 1980, personally -VIRTUALLY !

THE PHOTOS OF ARNIE RIPPED TO THE BONE SAY- SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS !!

MR.O - 1980 , WAS JUDGED ON THE BASIS , OF ARNIE’S MUSCLE SHAPE WITH THE REST OF THE REST !

ARNIE 1980 MUSCLE SHAPE = 1980 MR. OLYMPIA = RIGHTFUL WINNER !

THE 1979 MR.OLYMPIA WAS ALSO JUDGED ON THE BASIS OF THE SHAPE OF MUSCLES AND NOT MUSCLE SIZE !

FRANK ZANE WON BECAUSE HE HAD EXCELLENT , MUSCLE SHAPE !WAS MENTZER NOT BIGGER THAN ZANE IN 1979 - MR O ?

BUT THE SMALLER MAN - (ZANE ) WHO HAD BETTER MUSCLE SHAPE WON !

THE BIGGER MAN - MIKE MENTZER LOST !! WHY ?
CAUSE , MUSCLE SIZE DIDN’T COUNT !!!

MUSCLE SHAPE AND PROPORTION WAS COUNTED ... ! NOT MUSCLE SIZE !!!

The controversy over the ‘80 Olympia was overblown. I guess it’s hard to take when someone at 85 to 90% of his best beats you…but that’s just the way it is. The fact is, after Arnolds retirement and Louie not picking up the crown, bodybuilding was weak. All the guys who avoided competing against Arnold came into the IFBB pro. Dickerson would later be crowned Mr Olympia, the worst ever. Great elbows though. Coe had one good pose, the twisting 3/4 back. Zane was just too small, Arnold looked like Zane but super sized. That leaves Mentzer, who the judges had 5th. Absent Arnold he’s 4th. Arnold was just too big (height/frame/size) for the field and he was cut. He wasn’t 73/74 big, he wasn’t 75 big, but he still dwarfed everyone else. There was no Oliva, Ferrigno or Nubret that year so he wasn’t being challenged in the size/shape department. He was bigger, harder, more cut and had better shape than anyone else on that stage. He suffered however in comparison to our memories of himself; but he wasn’t competing against the 6 time Olympia winner, he was competing against a weak field.

A good examination of how big a “skinny” Arnold is:

Nice photo of Arnold compared to Mike, he was just too big and cut. Reminds me of Nubret. While browsing the web for info on Casey Viator after hearing of his passing away, I found these pictures of Arnold:

Here he dwarfs Franco and Sergio

Here, Sergio and Draper,

Peace to Casey.

Arnold came out of retirement to win the 1980 Mr. Olympia. He had his movie career then shooting for Conan The Barbarian. Arnold feels his contemporary bodybuilding colleagues were disappointed.

It was not an unanimous decision with the judges. The verdict was 5-2. It took a long time for Arnold to patch up with his competitors. He came out of retirement for the 1980 Olympia. Most of his fellow competitors thought he had a successful movie career going on. Maria initially rejected the decision but she put in great resourcefulness and initiative to help Arnold enter the contest. Maria was a great help to Arnold in his political career too as Arnold as the Governor of California. Throughout Arnold’s life Maria was the biggest source of support for Arnold. Arnold’s in laws Sargent Shriver and Eunice Shriver also influenced Arnold’s success. Of course Arnold’s mother Aurelia loved her beloved son most. It’s all written by Arnold in Total Recall - his autobiography.
